Cozy Up Children’s Books for Fall

Welcome to fall! Here are a few of our favorite books to cozy up and enjoy. Some of these books are set in autumn, some are not, but all of them are best shared curled up on a comfy couch.

I’d love to hear what books you find yourself reaching for when the leaves begin to change.

Pond by Jim LaMarche

LaMarche takes you on a journey through all of the seasons through the eyes of three kids who discover and rebuild an old pond. Slowing down they enjoy watching the seasons change and animals come and go as they immerse themselves in this new world.

A Sick Day for Amos McGee by Philip C. Stead

Stead’s A Sick Day for Amos McGee is perfect for fall days when sniffles arrive. Showcasing that adventures can be had, even when stuck in bed, when you have a lively imagination.

A Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night by Peter Spier

A Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night holds even the littlest listener’s attention as you sing this engaging and quirky tale.

Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco

A thunderstorm on the horizon, Grandma inspires her granddaughter to be brave one step at a time as they gather and prepare their Thunder Cake. One stormy day my kids came running into the kitchen yelling we needed to make Thunder Cake while it was still thundering – a beautiful story that steps right into your kitchen.

One Morning in Maine by Robert McCloskey

What a fright Sal has when she loses her first tooth! And then what curious and sweet connections she draws to losing a tooth when she finds a feather and a spark plug. McCloskey perfectly captures the imagination of Sal and takes us along for the ride.

Brambly Hedge Autumn Story by Jill Barklem

Young Primrose becomes separated from her father during harvest and becomes lost. A startling adventure for Primrose that ends safely at home. And since the days are getting shorter, why not read the rest of the Brambly Hedge series!

The Knight and the Dragon by Tomie dePaola

A tale of Knight (who has never fought a dragon) and a Dragon (who has never fought a Knight) and their preparations for their first big battle!

Ox-Cart Man by Donald Hall

Ox-Cart Man is one of my favorites to read aloud. Hall takes you through all of the seasons, diving into the hard work and full family effort that was life for farmers in the early nineteenth century.

Treasury for Children by James Herriot

A collection of eight stories from Herriot’s time as a farm animal vet. Each story is as engaging as the last. We have read and reread these!
