My mom asked me recently for book ideas for a baby shower. I realized it’s been a few years since I was in the “baby shower every weekend” stage of life. But some board books truly stand the test of time. My husband sat down with our youngest to read The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and the two older kids were drawn in like moths to a flame. Some books and illustrations capture young minds in such a sweet way – so let’s talk about our favorites!

Red Wagon by Renata Liwska
A sweet simple story that your kids will want to read time and time again because the illustrations are so engaging!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
Walking through the life of a caterpillar on its way to becoming a beautiful butterfly! Identifying fruits, various foods and counting, this books keeps littles reading along with you.

Jamberry by Bruce Degen
This was my favorite book as a kid – I still love taking my time soaking up all the details in the illustrations!

The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry & the Big Hungry Bear by Don and Audrey Wood
What in the title is never pictured in the book?

Chicka Chicka abc by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault
This will get stuck in your head. Thankfully it will also get stuck in your little’s head too and they will have the ABC’s rattling around all day!

Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson
Just out of college I got to live with my brother and his family. My two year old niece at the time loved this book and I have it memorized to this day because of her! It will always be a favorite of mine.

Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle
Lovely, rhyming story about lending a helping hand! Not to mention anytime kids get to make animals sounds while you read is a win.

Corduroy by Don Freeman
Another favorite from when I was a kid, I was excited to read with my kids. The bear’s desire to have a friend and the little girl’s love for him just the way he is, nearly makes me cry these days.

Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell
The flaps in this lift-a-flap book are always holding on by a thread because it is so well loved.

Good Night Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann
The illustrations in this book are so fun! The youngest readers love flipping through this book telling the story, no “word reading” necessary!

Where’s Spot? by Eric Hill
Sweet game of hide and seek in a lift-a-flap book that draws littles in time and time again.
